EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Fond du Lac School District has proposed a new operational referendum asking for $7.5 million per year over four years after last year's $10 million measure failed at the ballot (voter approval is needed to cover day-to-day costs). WBAY
- ➤ Fond du Lac and neighboring school districts will be closed on Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Jan. 19), while Marian University holds its annual Community Prayer Breakfast with keynote speaker Rev. Mary Council-Austin. FDL Reporter
- ➤ Marian University now provides versatile event spaces for meetings, conferences, weddings and special gatherings on campus with in-house services for sound, catering and event planning. - ➤ Marian University field hockey had nineteen student-athletes earn spots on the CFHC Academic Honor Roll, marking the most in program history. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has set sturgeon spearing caps for next month in Lake Winnebago at 280 juvenile, 659 adult female, and 981 adult male sturgeon, while other lakes have lower limits; spearers must carry a paper license and tag each catch. WBAY
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Health officials report very high flu activity driven by a new H3N2 variant that has quadrupled hospitalizations since December (only about 30% of residents have received the flu shot). Local clinics, including Fond du Lac’s SSM Health sites, are scheduling appointments to boost vaccinations. FDL Reporter
- ➤ SAMHSA has cut $2 billion in mental health and addiction prevention grants that support programs across Wisconsin, including services for children and tribal communities. Officials said the funding loss will stress local support programs (especially in areas with limited access) amid a rising mental health crisis. FDL Reporter
- ➤ SSM Health Eye Care today welcomes Dr. Charles Hendrix to the Fond du Lac Regional Clinic at 421 Camelot Drive, where he will offer eye exams, corrective lens prescriptions, and ocular disease management. He earned his degree from Illinois College of Optometry and specializes in pediatric and geriatric care. Envision Greater FDL
- ➤ The STAR program, a collaboration between the Winnebago County Jail, the Department of Human Services and Solutions Recovery, helped 650 inmates fight addiction in 2024 and has assisted over 2,000 people since 2022; it will celebrate its second anniversary on March 1. WBAY
