BUSINESS NEWS

CRIME NEWS

  • On Feb. 24, a sheriff's sergeant shot a man who refused to show his hands and held a BB gun, and District Attorney Eric Toney said Tuesday that Sergeant Andrew Kohlmann's use of force was lawful—protecting him and other deputies.  FDL Reporter
  • The Fond du Lac County District Attorney said Tuesday that Sergeant Andrew Kohlmann acted lawfully when he fired four rounds on February 24 at Jesus Mendez Berry, who had threatened officers and appeared armed with a weapon—later identified as a pellet gun.  WBAY
  • In February, the Fond du Lac County District Attorney ruled that the shooting of Jesus Armando Mendez Berry was justified because Berry, who had a BAC of .474 and cocaine in his system, ignored orders and brandished what appeared to be a handgun that turned out to be a pellet gun.  NBC 26

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Fond du Lac School District issued preliminary layoff notices to five teachers, including the union president, as cost-cutting measures after a failed referendum. The teachers’ union urged the public to attend a 4:30 p.m. private conference at the district office (preceded by a 4 p.m. press conference) as the district eliminated 83 positions overall, resulting in 27 layoffs.  FDL Reporter

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Earth Day was observed on April 22nd as a global event supporting environmental protection — it began in 1970 after a massive oil spill killed thousands of animals and was promoted by Wisconsin leader Gaylord Nelson who sparked environmental teach-ins.  KFIZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On April 22, the city closed the southbound lane of north Main Street from noon to 3 p.m. for water service installations under the Main Street Rehabilitation project; residents in the area maintained access to their homes. The city also closed the southbound lane of north Brooke Street from 6 a.m.—it will remain closed until 3 p.m. on April 29 for concrete pavement restoration.  KFIZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • SSM Health was honored with the Wisconsin Safety Council Workplace Safety Award at the 83rd Annual Safety Conference held April 15th—16th at the Kalahari Resorts and Convention Center in Wisconsin Dells, recognizing its long record of safe practices for patients, visitors and staff. The award underscores the organization’s commitment to daily safety and wellbeing across its facilities.  Envision Greater FDL
