- ➤ Fire Prevention Week running from October 5-11 highlights the risks of lithium-ion batteries—found in smartphones, tablets, and other devices—to encourage safe charging and proper recycling practices, while the National Fire Protection Association advises residents to follow manufacturer guidelines to prevent fires. - ➤ The Boys & Girls Club and the Family YMCA have launched a joint capital campaign called Our Future Together, Reimagined to expand and improve their community center. More than $5M has been raised so far—this effort will add security enhancements, an indoor walking track, a new wellness center, and a cafeteria for youth programs, and it seeks $500,000 in community donations. - ➤ Big Brothers Big Sisters of Fond du Lac County will host its Halloweenie Street Party in Downtown on Halloween (October 31) from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., offering food, music, a costume contest and other activities by local vendors; tickets cost $25 or $20 if registered by October 17 and proceeds benefit the organization. - ➤ The U.S. Postal Service has announced temporary price increases for Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, Ground Advantage and Parcel Select services to offset extra handling costs during the holiday season—these weight-dependent changes will be in effect from this week until January 18. KFIZ
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Wisconsin Broadcasters Association Foundation is offering three $2,500 scholarships and one $1,500 scholarship for students enrolled in media programs at eligible Wisconsin colleges, broadcast/media schools and technical colleges. Interested students must submit transcripts, letters of recommendation and an essay by 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31—applications will be accepted only if all materials are received by the deadline. KFIZ
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The city of Fond du Lac will start its annual leaf collection on Oct. 13—crews will move clockwise from the northeast as residents are asked to rake leaves next to the curb or deliver them to the yard waste drop-off site. Residents can also mulch or compost leaves to add nutrients to their lawns. FDL Reporter
- ➤ The SBA announced low-interest disaster loans for Wisconsin businesses, private nonprofits, and residents affected by August storms and flooding – Fond du Lac-area survivors are eligible for economic injury loans. Survivors must apply by Nov. 10 for physical damage or by June 11 for economic injury, and specialists helped applicants at a Milwaukee center on Sept. 17. Envision Greater FDL
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ ThedaCare staged a pediatric mass-casualty drill on October 2 at its Regional Medical Center-Neenah in collaboration with law enforcement and first responders to test its readiness for treating injured children — the exercise is part of steps to achieve pediatric readiness certification by the end of 2025. - ➤ ThedaCare is urging women to complete a breast cancer risk assessment by talking with their primary provider as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month; the assessment uses questions on factors (like age, family history and lifestyle) to help decide if additional screening may be needed. SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Marian University women’s golf team finished third at the NACC Championship as Yinan Lu earned medalist honors for the second time with rounds of 76, 75, and 71—her best score to date. This result marks Marian’s fourth straight top-three finish at the conference championship. Envision Greater FDL
- ➤ Illinois Tech led 1-0 after Cal Graham scored, but Marian University’s men's soccer tied the match 1-1 when freshman Szymon Kielar scored in the second half—junior goalie Tyler Hall made a final save to secure the tie. - ➤ Marian University women's volleyball (Sabres) lost in four sets to Wisconsin Lutheran with scores of 25-23, 25-13, 19-25 and 25-21. The team now holds a 30-24 all-time record against the Warriors. Envision Greater FDL
- ➤ Marian field hockey ended its eight-match road trip with a 3-1 loss to DePauw—DePauw scored early and kept the lead despite a strong third quarter from Marian. Marian now holds a 0-3 record against DePauw. Envision Greater FDL
